Afternoon Tea: the Original Snack Time

Afternoon tea has gone the way of social calling cards and is no longer a fixture in British society. That’s too bad, since relaxing with hot tea and a small meal, usually consisting of finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and other accoutrements and pastries, is so much better than snacking on a bag of chips from the office vending machine.

Afternoon tea originated in England in the 19th century when upper and lower classes ate their meals at different times. Usually, the lower classes would eat their mid-day meal around 11 a.m. and dinner at around 7 p.m. and upper classes would eat lunch around noon and dinner after 8 p.m. The small tea-time meal kept everyone happy.
