Ai Weiwei: New York Photographs 1983-1993

Ai Weiwei: Washington Square Park Protest 1988

The Asia Society Museum’s current photo exhibit presents New York City through famed Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei’s eyes. The 200+ black and white images capture the Lower East Side, Times Square, Thompson Square Park, subway platforms, backstage at the Metropolitan Opera and various artists and intellectuals at work and play. This is photography at its best.

Ai Weiwei left China for New York when he was 24. He studied at Parsons and lived in Brooklyn, the East Village and the Lower East Side. During the decade he lived in New York, he took 10,000 photos. His apartment was a gathering place for expats.

Weiwei remains a central figure in the Chinese art community. This year, his political statements criticizing the Chinese government landed him in jail for three months. He was recently released.
