Closet Case

In Luxembourg, it is atypical for apartments and houses to have built-in closets. This means you will have to purchase armoires – huge, heavy, pricey pieces that may or may not be useful/fit in your next place. They come in all sizes, and my favorite was the extra-large 300 cm.

We began our armoire search at three superstores that came highly recommended (thanks, Esther and Andrew!):

Kichechef (in Capellen, about ten minutes from Luxembourg’s center): Go here. This would have been a one-stop shop for us except the lighting fixtures were a little pricey.*  The multi-floor display was nicely laid out and contained everything from vases and window treatments to beds and bathroom fixtures. We were ready to buy armoires and a bed from Kichechef, but then were told the standard delivery time is eight weeks, plus we should allow for another two (“just because”), for a total of 10 weeks. Since we currently have zero armoires, this timeframe did not work for us.

Möbel Martin (in Konz, Germany, about 20 minutes from Luxembourg’s city center): Also, go here. This is the biggest store I’ve ever seen. It makes Macy’s Herald Square look like a joke. There’s nothing to say except that it has everything. Many, many, many choices for anything you could possibly want in your home. Really. Anything.

Möbel Hölzmer (in Trier, Germany, about 20 minutes from Luxembourg’s city center): This is a lower-priced version of Kichechef and smaller than Möbel Martin, so I would rank this third in terms of priorities.

Ikea (in Arlon, Belgium, about ten minutes from Luxembourg): It turns out this is the only place to go if you want an armoire in less than 10 weeks. The biggest downside (aside from the obvious ones) is that the salespeople don’t speak English. We had to customize two enormous armoires without uttering a word en anglais. The best parts: the delivery time is three weeks (“maybe more, maybe less”) and you can pay to have the items assembled.

*It is standard for apartments to be delivered without lighting fixtures. Basic fixtures here started at around €200 or so, compared to €70 – 100 in other stores.
