Delft

A duck floats by a sunken bicycle

It took us a few trips to the Netherlands to make it to Delft. The cozy city is between larger cities Den Haag and Rotterdam and en route to Amsterdam, so we always flew by it on the highway. A year ago, we even passed it up for a bunch of flowers!

It’s a good thing we stopped this time. Delft is a treasure of a city. It’s cute in that special Dutch way, with tree-lined canals, curving bridges, ancient red-tiled houses and friendly, smiling Dutch people.

Delft is an ideal wandering city. We spent most of our time walking around, ducking in and out of the wind and the snow. The storm made the city peaceful , even a bit surreal as life continued atop the canals.

There was no shortage of cafes and bars in which to pass a few snowy hours. Like the rest of the Netherlands, Delft was designed for leisure. That alone is an compelling reason to visit.
