Mondorf-les-Bains

Luxembourg Duoanes, or Customs

With so many notable European locales within a short distance of Luxembourg City, it’s hard to remember to pay attention to what’s in our back yard. My friend Anita and I recently went on a photo field trip and were delighted to discover a sizable list of nearby (within a half hour) towns neither of us had visited! It was hard to choose, but we picked one, Mondorf-les-Bains.

Mondorf-les-Bains is a small Luxembourg town on the French border, about twenty minutes from Luxembourg City. Mondorf is best known for its thermal spa resort and its casino.

Mondorf put itself on the map in the 19th century when locals discovered a mineral-rich spring. It was, of course, by accident. The locals had drilled a 736-meter hole, hoping to hit a vein of rock salt to circumvent the prohibitively expensive imported salt. I’m not sure what ended up happening to the affordability of salt, but the water from the spring quickly gained fame for its healing and restorative powers. People have been flocking to Mondorf ever since.

This is the old checkpoint at the French-Luxembourg border. It’s hard to believe drivers used to have to stop before entering a new country!

Old Border Checkpoint

Though the building is old, the Luxembourg customs building had some modern design touches.
