Musée des Beaux-Arts

The Musée des Beaux-Arts is one of France’s oldest museums. Within its ornate galleries, it has impressive collections ranging from Egyptian art to the 20th century. Most notable is the late 18th century European collection and the 15th century Burgundian collection.

The centerpiece is the former great hall, now called the Salles des Gardes, where all the frou-frou Burgundian court events occurred. The carved medieval sepulchers and tombs of two dukes of Burgundy, Philip the Bold and John the Fearless, were relocated here from their original resting place, the Chartreuse de Champmol (the ducal family’s burial place), in 1827. We were disappointed that this room was closed for renovation until 2013.

Other collections of note include medieval and Renaissance Burgundian sculpture, medieval Flemish, Italian, Swiss and German paintings, 16th and 17th century Flemish and Dutch paintings and 16th to 20th century French pieces.

Palais des ducs et des Etats de Bourgogne, open Wednesday to Monday, 9.30-18.00.
