Nil was recommended to me by my friend Alex, who used to live in Hamburg. I expected it to be good, but it ended up being the best meal I’ve had in awhile! The dishes were not particularly inventive, but the ingredients were seasonal and fresh and each course was solidly delicious.
NIL specializes in international cuisine. It has a varied menu featuring seafood, meat, pastas and vegetables. We enjoyed goat cheese and avocado, grilled tuna with ratatouille and polenta, scallops with spinach, onion quiche and candied tomatoes, a fish appetizer that we can’t recall the details of (but doesn’t it look good?) and a local Riesling. The meal cost us just under €100 (intentionally, since we didn’t realize the restaurant does not accept credit cards until we were seated and we only had €100 on us).
The restaurant’s three levels were filled to capacity. This is obviously a popular spot. Many of the customers were in casually fashionable attire, but the guy sitting to my left was in a sweatshirt and that was fine, too.
The restaurant is in the Schanzenviertel neighborhood, just north of St. Pauli’s busy streets. We loved the neighborhood, which has a vibrant, casual feel and is full of bars, restaurants and shops.
