Stepping into this amazing exhibit is like getting into a time capsule and emerging on a 19th century beach. A 19th century Dutch beach, that is.
The panorama is a large-scale naturalistic depiction of the sea, the dunes and the seaside resort town of Scheveningen in 1881, as envisioned by Hendrik Mesdag, a Dutch banker-turned-artist.
Viewers climb one flight up a spiral staircase and stand atop a platform to view the 365-degree landscape. The perspective is startlingly realistic; you forget that you are inside a building gazing at a canvas. The lighting changes to create a passing day and the piped soundtrack reflects the sea and surrounding areas.
Downstairs is a small exhibit of Mesdag’s other work, mostly seascapes.
