A splash of color on a rainy day

Bonner Weihnachtsmarktes, or Bonn’s Christmas Markets

Bonn’s Christmas markets sprawl throughout the city center, across the main squares Münsterplatz and Friedensplatz and streets Bottlerplatz, Windeckstrasse, and Vivatsgasse. It’s very convenient that they’re all adjacent, especially when it’s raining like it was when I visited! 170+ wooden chalets offer local crafts, toys, decorative items, sweets and other gift items. There’s no shortage […]

I like the elaborate, rustic stands

Trierer Weihnachtsmarkt, or Trier’s Christmas Market

Trier’s Christmas market has a pleasant array of appealing vendors in its 95 stands. You’d be hard-pressed not to find some gifts. The booths offer decorative items, candles, ceramics and wooden and glass crafts, knitwear and wooden toys. Trier, Germany’s oldest town, is located about half an hour from Luxembourg. For more of its history, […]

Illuminated Borse

Plaisirs d’hiver, or Winter Wonders, Brussels

The Brussels Christmas Market is one of the largest in Europe. Over 250 stands spread over 2 kilometers vie for your attention and your wallet. Since it is one of the well-regarded markets, I had high hopes but was disappointed with the offerings. Some of the usual suspects are here: jewelry, scarves, Christmas ornaments, candles […]

Many varieties of olives were on offer

Verbania Market

Markets are the best way to get a feel for a region and Verbania is no exception. The Saturday morning market is worth seeing simply for the food. Unless you’re in the market for underwear or street vendor-quality clothing, you’ll spend most of your time marveling over humungous cheeses, fresh pastries and cured meats.

Arras Grand Place 1-2

Grand Place, Arras, France

Arras has not one, but two quaint city squares. In medieval times, the squares functioned as markets; farmers and merchants would bring their wares here to sell and trade. These days, there’s a Saturday morning market that offers fresh produce, baked goods, jewelry, fabric and household goods. Thanks to its proximity to WWI’s front line, […]

Nice Market 1

Nice Market

There’s no better way to get a feel for a city than through its markets. Vieux Nice has a thriving at cours Saleya with flowers, produce, antiques and artwork. Make sure to arrive before 1 p.m., though, when the vendors begin packing up and the area restaurants begin rolling out their awnings. Tuesday through Sunday […]

Luxembourg Christmas Market

There was finally a break in the rain, so I headed out to the small Luxembourg Christmas market. I’m sad to report that neither the food nor the shopping approached the quality of Strasbourg or Trier. The latkes were too thick and unflavorful, perhaps because they were preformed and sitting in industrial-sized stacks for who-knows-how-long. […]

Mapusa Market-5

Mapusa Markets

Mapusa is the largest town in northern Goa and is known for its markets. The most popular one is Friday Market, which I missed. Although I was not seeking any of the items sold, it was fun to look around at the piles of textiles, bins of household tools and spreads of produce, flowers and […]

fish market-1

Rialto Market

Visiting the Rialto Market made me wish I had rented an apartment instead of a hotel room. The produce was aromatic and colorful and the fish was so fresh some of it was still alive. The best part was watching the locals haggle with the fishmongers.
