We spent a lot of time in Provence sampling and purchasing wine and olive oil. There’s an abundance of each at most every turn, so the key is doing research beforehand to identify those that sound most alluring.
We read favorable things about olive oil cooperative Moulin Coopératif de Mouriès and wanted to check it out. It’s been in operation since the 1920’s, when area olive grove owners grouped together to share productions expenses. Today, there are 300 members.
Mouriès is in the heart of Baux-de-Provence, which has olive groves, vineyards and rolling hills in every direction. The region’s four varieties of olives comprise the Vallée des Baux-de-Provence AOC olive oil.
The cooperative adheres to strict density requirements and extraction methods. The oil is produced with a single cold pressing. The resulting product is extra virgin, 100% natural with no additives.
Luckily, the 17th-century mill has an attached shop. We sampled four different varieties of olive oil, each one distinct and tasting like nature, unlike any other oil I’ve ever had. Yum.
Open, generally, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and closed for lunch.
