Calm East River with Triboro Bridge in the Background

Early Morning on the East River

I was glad to run along the East River this morning. It hadn’t run on this side of the city in years! I liked the early morning calmness on the river.

NYC Chelsea Window

Chelsea Window

I always get a kick out of this West 22nd Street window. The images amuse me and I also can’t help but wonder who would give up this unobstructed source of light? I understand not wanting to open the window, but the midday sun must hit these north-facing panes pretty nicely. street art, Manhattan, New […]

Maybe Cindy Sherman’s clowns were still infiltrating my brain, but on my way back from a morning run, this West 18th-ish Street series caught my eye. street art, graffiti, Manhattan, New York City, New York

NYC Cindy Sherman-2

Cindy Sherman Retrospective

What a treat to view Cindy Sherman’s genius in this MoMA retrospective. The 170 images cohesively highlight her career-long vision of reflecting society’s narrow ideas of identity at the viewer. Sherman’s lens exposes society’s perceptions and depictions in startling, poignant ways. For 35 years, Sherman has played the role of model, stylist and director to […]

NYC Wharton Exhibit1

Edith Wharton’s New York

In honor of the 150th anniversary of Edith Wharton’s birth, the New York Society Library curated a small, pleasing exhibit,“Edith Wharton’s New York City: A Backward Glance.” I’m always interested in learning all I can about favorite authors. I guess I’m a bit obsessed with the stories behind the great stories. Or is it that […]

NYC Window Washer 21

Free Falling

Am I just a total wimp, or is this a startling sight? I was walking down a quiet Chelsea street, happened to look up and saw this untethered guy. We’ve all seen window washers on swing scaffolds float past high-rise windows, but has anyone ever wondered how midrise buildings addressed dirty windows? Yikes. window, washing, […]

NYC Free Portrait-2

Free Portraits

A great New York moment: this photographer had set up his beautiful 4×5 large format camera and was offering free portraits until he ran out of film. Everyone who approached him had many questions about his camera, why he was doing this, when they would receive the image, etc. It was fun watching people pose.
