A few colorful buildings caught my eye today.

Early Morning on the East River
I was glad to run along the East River this morning. It hadn’t run on this side of the city in years! I liked the early morning calmness on the river.

Cats in the City
New York is firmly a dog city, so what’s up with all these cats I saw on my walk today?

Keeping Cool
Okay, am I the only one who thinks it’s laughable when people walk around using umbrellas as parasols?! Do they really make a difference in hundred-degree weather?

Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Winery
We wanted to visit this Mosel Valley winery because of its excellent Doctor Heidemanns-Bergweiler wine. Well, it turns out that label is strictly for export, but the winery offers a different line, Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler, from the mother estate. The 4-acre Bernkasteler alte Badstube am Doctorberg is the winery’s prime vineyard. The vines are over 80 […]

Anton Hammes Wine Estate
We happened upon Anton Hammes one rainy morning. We were scurrying down the wet sidewalk searching for open wineries and saw someone emerge from this cellar-level tasting room with a few bottles. Jackpot! As is typical in many Mosel wineries, we were greeted by the owner. In this case, he was a very friendly man […]

Bernkastel-Kues, Germany
Bernkastel-Kues is the hub of the Mittelmosel (the middle Mosel wine region), situated at a dramatic bend in the twisting river. This is considered one of the most valuable wine regions in Germany thanks to the climate, terrain and steep slope of the land. The town is the earliest known settlement on the Mosel, as […]

Mosel Valley
If you want excellent Riesling, head to the oldest and largest source, the Mosel Valley. The Mosel Valley (Moselle in French and Mosel in German) is the world’s largest contiguous Riesling-growing region. Thanks to the cool, rainy climate, steep hills that rise straight up from the Mosel River’s banks and mineral-rich soil, the Mosel’s vineyards […]

Eglise St. Jean Baptiste, Arras, France
This small Catholic church peeks above the rooftops. When this church was built in the 12th century it was called Saint Nicolas des Fosses since it was constructed on the site of Bastion Saint Nicolas. In the1560’s, that church was demolished and rebuilt. During the French Revolution, most churches were sold as national property and […]

Arras Buildings
Arras, France: yet another town in which to fall in love with charming building details! I liked the expressive faces. I’ve no idea what this is (it’s affixed to an external wall), but I thought the face was an amusing touch! You can’t beat the intricate Hôtel de Ville roof.
