This grand arch faces out to Mumbai Harbor from the tip of Apollo Bunder in Colaba, Mumbai’s southernmost district. It was built to commemorate the 1911 royal visit of King George V (although completed in 1924) and is based on the Islamic styles of 16th century Gujarat.

On Driving in India
Indian drivers are among the most proactive I’ve ever seen. That’s the only way I can put it. Oh wait, here’s another: Indian drivers maximize the amount of time they are in motion. You might think this is not so unlike Western drivers, but read on… Middle of the Road: In India, it is typical […]

Muscle Power
Old-fashioned muscle power is a popular and effective mode of transport here. It was hard to engage in close-up street photography since so many locals disliked a camera pointed at them, but hopefully these capture a bit of the city.

We’ve Got a Runner
Right idea, wrong direction! I would have loved to see how far this turtle got in his escape, but, well, I didn’t have all day.

It has three-story inlaid walnut bookshelves and an intricately painted ceiling. Contents include rare printed books and bindings, handwritten […]

Occupy Wall Street
Occupy Wall Street is still going strong and remains as organized as ever. I’m not sure if I’m more impressed with the fight for the important (albeit disorganized and overwhelmingly vast) causes or the tidiness.

Lulu Cake Boutique
This masterful High Line and Standard Hotel sugar creation caught my eye! Lulu Cake Boutique is yet another bakery, but with some imagination. Skip the basic cupcakes and try the retro confections: Pink Snowballs (chocolate cake filled with coconut custard, enrobed in pink marshmallow frosting and coconut flakes), Chocodiles (golden butter cake filled with vanilla […]

McNally Jackson and the Espresso Book Machine
This print-on-demand contraption, the Espresso Book Machine, is a compelling reason to visit McNally Jackson Books. It’s a thrill to choose from over seven million titles and print a book, all for the price of an off-the-shelf paperback. The store also stocks very well-edited selections on every subject. The vast literature department is helpfully organized […]
