This tiny, triangular Greenwich Village square resulted from Seventh and Eighth Avenues’ extensions south of 14^th Street in the early 1900’s. In 1943, the site was named in honor of U.S. Marine Bernard Joseph McCarthy, the first reported Greenwich Village resident killed in WWII.
