Musée Gustave-Moreau

Upon entering small, serene Musée Gustave-Moreau, you will not only be transported back more than a century, but you will also be overtaken by your inner artist. You’ll be inspired to pick up a pencil or paintbrush and create!

This museum displays the life and work of French symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Even if the subject matter (mostly biblical and mythological) isn’t your cup of tea, it’s worth going inside to have a quick look.

Moreau created this museum out of the house he shared with his parents. He conceived of its design so that his work would be arranged as he saw fit. He paid for the construction himself and completed the renovation in 1896, two years before his death.

The first two floors retain a homey feel and contain rooms such as Moreau’s study, bedroom and dining room. Each room is chock full of furniture, paintings, rare books and decorative items.

The top two floors are huge open studios where Moreau’s canvases hang cheek-to-cheek with one another.
