Desmond Tutu Center

Desmond Tutu Center at General Theological Seminary

As Angelo and I prepare to move from New York to Luxembourg, our apartment is a wreck. We’ve put all the things we’re not bringing such as electronics and old photo albums in one area and let the four movers quickly and efficiently pack up the rest. Since our place is unlivable, we were forced to seek shelter elsewhere for a few nights. But, where to go?

The closest and therefore most convenient place for us to stay was the Desmond Tutu Center at the General Theological Seminary on Tenth Avenue between 20th and 21st Streets. The Desmond Tutu Center is a limited service hotel – no meals, no gym, no frills – that is clean, in a great location adjacent to the new elevated High Line Park and the many restaurants and bars of West Chelsea and the meatpacking district.

Best Features: 1) stunning private, full-block quadrangle inside the seminary walls that I’d only before peered at from the street, 2) large room (disclaimer: I did not view any other rooms)

Worst Features: 1) desperately needs a top-to-bottom renovation as evidenced by the shoddy repair job (bubbling plaster) near the ceiling, 2) no gym (I simply went across the street to the gym where I’m a member, Chelsea Piers, to which a tourist could just purchase a guest pass), 3) pretty comparable price to a full-service hotel.
