Asamkirche, or St-Johann-Nepomuk, Munich

Asamkirche-7

This over-the-top 18th-century church was designed by the Asam brothers, who Rococo’d many of Bavaria’s churches.

The interior is small, just 22 x 8 meters, but not an inch was spared. It is divided into three sections – the dark, lower portion is for visitors and signifies suffering, the lighter middle portion was reserved for the Holy Roman Emperor and the lightest upper third is for God and eternity.

This was the brothers’ private church; they bought the land and paid for the construction in order to design exactly what they desired and lived in the house next door.
