certificate de résidence, or, how to waste tons of paper

This is the end goal of the process: getting your fingerprints and photo taken for your residency card

The first order of business today was visiting the Luxembourg City office to declare our arrival and obtain our certificate de résidence. Anyone intending to reside in Luxembourg for an extended period of time must declare within three days of arrival. I expected it to be akin to going to the DMV, but was pleasantly surprised when we walked in, pulled a number, and were promptly called to an English-speaking clerk. We provided our authorization to stay, or Autorisation de séjour, which is obtained before leaving the home country (be prepared to provide certified copies of every piece of documentation imaginable and swear you’re not a criminal), as well as our passports and marriage license. We filled out forms with our New York address and, oddly, information about our parents. Every document was copied multiple times, each page was methodically stamped and signed by the clerk and we were sent on our way.

Next step: obtain residence permits, or Titre de séjour, which requires the Autorisation, the declaration, a medical exam, and proof of accomodation.

Where to declare yourself: Bierger-Center, Centre Hamilius, 51 boulevard Royal, L-2449 Luxembourg, open Monday to Friday 08:00 – 17:00
