Hotel Colombi, Freiburg

The gigantic Christmas tree

Hotel Colombi was recommended as a good place to spend Christmas, and we were not disappointed. Freiburg’s five-star hotel is well-located on the western edge of the city center. The service was impeccable and the room was clean, large and comfortable.

Our comfortable room

Double room

The 112 rooms are individually furnished and range from singles to suites. Like many old hotels, some of the modern touches are implemented in an average manner. Specifically, the rain shower heads in the classic tubs are a questionable implementation since too much water ends up on the floor.

The gourmet restaurant, Zirbelstube, has had one Michelin star since the 1980’s and is a decadent experience. We had the multi-course tasting menus on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with local reds and whites. The set menu was €85/person; with wine, our checks were about €270 each night.

Festive gingerbread house

There is also an informal café that serves kaffee und kuchen during the day.

Lounge

The gym was nothing great and was very humid since it was adjacent to the pool. We ran outside one day, but it was a sub-par experience since many of the footpaths along the river were severely flooded. Oh well, so much for working off the heavy German food.

Overall, we were very glad we stayed at Hotel Colombi for the Christmas holiday.
