M. Chat

Do you ever see an amusing design, barely pay it any attention, then start seeing it over and over again in a completely different location? For me, the latest incident of that is this cat.

M. Chat off the High Line, NYC

I’ve seen this yellow, grinning cat in New York, but this is the first time I’ve noticed it in Paris. I guess I’m an oblivious wanderer since, according to the artist, Thoma Vuille, there are about 60 of these in the arrondisements!

It turns out this is M. Chat (Monseiur Chat or Mr. Chat). He originally appeard in Orléans, France in 1997, most frequently on chimneys and train platforms. The artist was a mystery until 2007, when he was caught by police.

The cat is most often seen running, but he’s also known to bounce on balls, appear with angel wings and wave.
