Mamallapuram

From Chennai, we headed south down the coast, which was similar to many sparsely developed coastal regions. The road was flat and open and lined with sporadic retail structures like electronics shops, discount clothing boutiques and restaurants. Every so often, we caught glimpses of secluded resorts tucked away along the ocean.

We stayed at the InterContinental. While I normally appreciate contemporary buildings, this resort’s modern, blocky design was way too closed-in and dark for an ocean-front property.

The beach was clean and peaceful. We were the only ones out there.

Well, almost the only ones.

In India, cows wander like dogs do in the rest of the world.

We didn’t go into the water since it’s known for its strong currents and tides.
