Notre Dame de Paris

I can never resist photographing beautiful Notre Dame de Paris.

This Roman Cathoilic cathedral is one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in Europe and was one of the first buildings in the world to use flying buttresses. Construction began in the 12th century, after the existing 4th century Saint-Étienne (which was sited on the old Roman temple to Jupiter) was demolished.

The rose windows were added in the 1200’s. A rose window is a circular window divided into segments by stone mullions (a dividing vertical element) and tracery (stonework elements that support glass), particularly characteristic of Gothic architecture. These can be seen in all the major Gothic cathedrals in northern France.
