Royal Delft

Before and after

Royal Delft, established in 1653, is the last remaining original Delft blue earthenware factory. Here, you can take a tour through the factory to watch the production and the careful artisans who paint each piece by hand.

The factory is quiet on a Saturday.

Mugs awaiting design

During the tour, you walk through the museum, which houses an enormous collection of Delft Blue antiques. Basically, anything that could be glazed has fallen victim to the blue and white finish.

A worker paints the details on a small vase.

It was pretty magical to see the factory and understand what goes into each piece. Not many items with this level of production are hand-made.

The pottery looked beautiful in its raw state.

An antique vase on offer

Of course, the tour culminates in a sizable shop that sells everything from place settings to vases to Christmas tree ornaments and teapots and anything else you could want. I will not deny it – my husband and I bought two Christmas ornaments.

The shop sells any item you might want

Royal Delft is about a 20-minute walk from the center of town.

The factory is housed in the original brick building
