Saint Maximin Church

Saint Maximin is Thionville’s first parish. It dates back to 930, when it belonged to Maximin Abbey in Trier, Germany.

This structure dates from the 12th century, but of course its existence has not been without drama! For example, it was significantly rebuilt in the 15th century following fire damage. Then, in the 18th century, the church was renovated to accommodate its growing popularity. The current structure’s sparse design is not a statement but rather reflects the parsimony of the Abbot of St. Maximin of Trier.

This church has a southwest orientation, so as not to encroach on the ramparts.
Like many churches in fortified cities, it has two bell towers, multiple observation platforms and vast underground storage areas.
