Santa Maria Sopra Minerva

High Altar

This 13th century structure is the only Gothic church in Rome that was spared a total Baroque makeover. I say “total”, because the façade and part of its nave did not quite escape the 16th century Baroque chisel.

Colorful Arched Vaulting

The big draw is Michelangelo’s sculpture, Cristo della Minerva, or Christ Bearing the Cross.

Michelangelo’s Cristo della Minerva

The church was built on the site of an ancient temple to Minerva. Residents include Pope Paul IV, Dominican friar Fra Angelico and St. Catherine of Siena (just her body as her head is in Siena).

Piazza della Minerva, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
