Venice is quintessential locavore eating. While Venice is not known for having rave-worthy food, it is known for traditional dishes consisting of seasonal vegetables and fresh seafood. Polenta (Venice’s answer to Southern Italy’s pasta) and Prosecco round out the meals.
Venice is also famous for its risotto. The risotto is prepared much more al dente than any I’ve had in the U.S., and is subsequently about a hundred times more delicious. Order it as often as you can! But be prepared to wait. Someone gave me a great tip: do not order risotto in a restaurant where you see the dishes coming out quickly. Good risotto takes at least half an hour to reach your plate.
Prima colazione (breakfast) all over Venice is a quick cup of coffee and a croissant or a pastry, usually taken standing up at the counter.
